Going out: Pinto

When Pinto first opened on Queen Street, they promised a fiesta in my mouth – they weren’t wrong. As soon as you enter Pinto you want to get your sombrero and maracas out. The decor is bright and modern and the music upbeat and feisty.

My boyfriend and I went for lunch and, unsure what to order, the staff seemed pleased to recommend their favourites from the menu. We started with soup: chicken tortilla for me and black-bean for him. The tortilla soup may not be for everyone (it has crushed up tortilla chips in a broth), but I know the next time I want some comfort food it’ll be my first thought. The black-bean soup was spicier, both were delicious.

Then came the main event. I had a steak burrito with chipotle chilli whilst my boyfriend had crispy chargrilled chicken tacos. Until the end of January you can get a main meal and a soft drink for £5. The size of the portions alone made for excellent value for money. I enjoy Mexican food and often cook it at home, so I particularly liked being able to customise my meal so that it was as hot and guacamole-laden as I wanted.
What sets Pinto apart is that, despite being in the same price-range as ‘fast food’, there’s not a microwave in sight. Everything at Pinto is made by the chefs and it shows. The food tastes likes it’s homemade, except without the hassle. The chicken is Halal and there are vegetarian options too, meaning everyone can enjoy the experience.
How about something cold to wash your food down with? Make sure you try the imported Mexican beer, Modelo. Authentic Mexican cocktails are also available.
If you’re looking for somewhere to head for lunch or dinner after class that won’t break the bank – but will fill you up – then definitely give this a go. I can’t wait to try everything on the menu, if only every day could be a Pinto day.
