Over 100 protestors gathered outside Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Sunday in a bid to stop the proposed removal of the steps, as part of the council’s £400 million Buchanan Galleries extension which will replace the steps with a glass atrium.
Around 13,800 people have signed an online Save the Steps petition against the plans, which the council is expected to debate again at the end of the month.
Glasgow University masters student Aileen McKay, one of the protest organisers, spoke of the great support throughout the campaign.
“People in Glasgow do have a strong voice, so it is vital that – regardless of what their views are – there is a civic space like this for them to speak at.
It is all very well signing a petition but this captures the attention that we need from the media and passers-by.”
Throughout the Independence referendum, the steps, which look on to First Minister Donald Dewar’s statue, were used by speakers on both sides of the debate and campaigners want Glasgow City Council to cancel plans for removing them.
The group have also expressed their anger over plans to move the Donald Dewar statue to another location.
The plans are expected to improve access to the Royal Concert Hall for disabled people, as currently there is only one disabled entrance to the building located on Killermont Street.
However, campaigners say the entryway should be made more accessible without demolishing the steps.
Marion Nisbet, a Glasgow Care Crisis worker, said: “I’m appalled they are using disability as an excuse to take away these steps, there are hundreds of other options.”
Patrick Harvie, Green MSP for Glasgow, agreed that more should be done to improve disabled access to the Concert Hall but that “taking away such a creative and public space would be a real shame.”
“There is still a huge number of people in Glasgow who don’t know what’s being planned. Tell people, encourage them to have their voices heard when the decision is made.”
