FOLLOWING on from an election plagued by technical problems and accusations between candidates, former President of the University of Strathclyde Student’s Association Philip Whyte has been re-elected with a majority of over 400 votes.

Whyte saw off the challenge of Bryan Simpson, picking up 979 votes compared to the Reclaim Our Education runner’s 527.

Student apathy was the big winner, however, with only 1600 students turning out to vote.

The union elections were engulfed in chaos earlier this week when technical difficulties left online polls closed for thirteen hours.

Server Crash Delays Elections

ELECTIONS for the University of Strathclyde’s Students Association (USSA) were thrown into disarray on Monday night as online polls shut down for thirteen hours.

Students were unable to cast their votes from half-past seven till mid-morning the following day, with concerns now growing that election turnout could plummet as a result.

A technical difficulty with the external server hosting the elections has been identified as the cause of the crash, forcing the union to switch polls to Pegasus and extend the deadline till 9am today.

TWO candidates running under the “Reclaim Our Education” banner have been criticised for the way they conducted their election campaign.

An e-mail was sent to over 450 recipients after the server hosting the online polls crashed, alleging that the technical difficulties were deliberate.

The e-mail, from the University of Strathclyde’s Stop the War Group, read: “Voting in the upcoming student elections has now been moved to Pegasus due to voting irregularities and polls will be open until 9am, March 3rd.

AFTER a monumental technological disaster, yesterday’s planned live commentary on the Student Union’s Electoral Debate failed. That said here’s a rundown of what happened….

First off, attendance was fairly low, with a few folk coming and going but never reaching much higher than the mid-50s, including the candidates. Since the majority of people in the room already knew who they were going to vote for, it wasn’t going to be a night that decided the elections. This said, the candidates did take it seriously and the majority were passionate about what they had planned.
