Success at BUCS for Boat Club
A HIGHLY successful year for the boat club was extended in Nottingham at the BUCS 2010 regatta. After winning the University winter league and taking second place in the Scottish University Championships and Scottish Indoor Championships a small group made the long journey south for the biggest student rowing regatta in Europe with over 4000 competitors.
The weather was nothing short of terrible with strong winds whipping up huge waves that rolled the length of the course and at many points racing was suspended to allow storms of hailstones to pass.
Saturday saw Chris Rae take Bronze in the championship single scull putting him in contention for a possible place at the European University Championships. Chris is a member of the GB Rowing World Class Start (WCS) Programme along with another Strathclyde athlete competing on Saturday, Mike McLaren who was unlucky not to progress any further from his heat.

On the evening of Tuesday April 6, in Barcelona, Spain, inside the Nou Camp, Lionel Messi has just latched onto a through ball and is one on one with the goalkeeper. The easy option would be to round the keeper and slot the ball into an empty net, but this Argentinean is here to entertain and instead decisively chips the ball over a helpless Almunia.
But his victory in Malaysia sent an ominous warning to the rest of the field and brought him right into the thick of the championship battle. If, and it is a big if, Red Bull can sort these issues out and Vettel can keep his cool, it will be difficult for anyone else to challenge for the title.
The Women's Shinty Team ended the season with a spectacular victory in the annual McCue & Porter Trophy competition, beating surprise finalists Aberdeen 2 - 0 in St Andrew's on Wednesday March 24. The event, which takes the form of a round-robin tournament, with the top two teams playing in the final, is the pinnacle of University Shinty. Strathclyde are one of only three Universities to have ever held the cup, their most recent success came in the academic year 2001/2002.
